Erythrina variegata Linn belongs to the family leguminosae. Various parts of this plant is used for the treatment of fever, inflammation, joint pain, earache, toothache, constipation, cough and also known to stimulate lactation and menstruation. Different parts of Erythrina variegata Linn are used in traditional medicine as nervine sedative, febrifuge, anti-asthmatic and antiepileptic. The present study was aimed at the evaluation of anti-inflammatory property of aqueous and alcoholic extracts of the leaves by in-vitro method. The in-vitro method was estimated by human red blood cell membrane stabilization method (HRBC). The chloroform and water extract at a concentration of 100 and 200 µg/ml showed potent activity when compared with the standard drug diclofenac sodium....
Obesity has been declared one of the major threats to human health in 21st century. Obesity and its associated disorders are a growing epidemic across the world. Many genetic, physiological and behavioural factors play a role in the etiology of obesity. It has become the center of much clinical attention and especially clinical laboratories, whose aim was to reduce this new world syndrome. Chitosan is a derivative of chitin, natural polymer of glucosamine and N-acetylglucosamine derived from the shells of crustaceans such as crabs, lobsters and shrimps. It is one of the most abundant natural polymer after cellulose. And cimetidine is H2 receptor antagonist. The main aim of present study was to evaluate antiobesity activity of cimetidine and chitosan in combination on diet induced obese rats. All the animals were divided into five groups of six mice each. Group I was served as normal control received, Group II received only cafeteria diet. Group III received cafeteria diet and cimetidine (14.2 mg/kg p.o.) for 6 weeks. Group IV received cafeteria diet and chitosan (300 mg/kg p.o.) for 6 weeks and Group V received combination of cafeteria diet and chitosan for 6 weeks. The result shows that cimetidine and chitosan gives beneficial effect to reduce obesity alone or in combination. The result was expressed as mean±SEM and was statistically analyzed by one way ANOVA....
The objective of the study was to investigate the effect of isatin against cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity in male albino rats. Nephrotoxicity was induced by intra peritoneal administration of cisplatin (6 mg/kg body wt, i.p). Isatin was administered by gastric intubation. Animals were divided into 5 groups, each group containing 6 animals, group I animals received vehicle (1% CMC), group II animals received cisplatin on day 1, group III received 400 mg /kg body weight isatin for 10 days, group IV and V received 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg body weight isatin respectively. From day 1 to day 10 and on day 5 these groups received cisplatin. On day 9 urine was collected and urinary functional parameters were estimated on day 10 blood was collected BUN, SC were estimated. Cisplatin caused acute renal damage characterized by elevation of BUN, SC. Animals received isatin reversed all the effects induced by cisplatin in dose dependent manner. Present study reveals that isatin attenuated the nephrotoxicity of cisplatin in rats....
Tridax procumbens Linn. (Family: Asteraceae) is being used in traditional medicine for the prevention and treatment of ulcer. In our previous work on same plant material Tridax procumbens Linn for evaluation of anti-ulcer activity by using histopathology and ulcer index on mice and rats it is revealed that methanol extract 100 mg/kg was found to be effective in protection of ulcer as compare to petroleum ether extract. Therefore in present research work our aim was to validate protective effect of methanol extract of Tridax Procumbens Linn potential in ulcerative colitis in albino rats by using myeloperoxidase activity. In the present study methanol extract 100 mg/kg of Tridax procumbens Linn was validated for ulcer protection activity using myeloperoxidase activity in albino rats. The results of present investigation showed that the myeloperoxidase activity of methanol extract 100 mg/kg was 2.74 U/g which was near about 50% lower than Experimental Control which is 4.74 U/g. standard drug prednisolone 5 mg/kg which shows 0.85 U/g. From the myeloperoxidase activity study it can be concluded that the methanolic extract (100 mg/kg) of whole plant of Tridax procumbens Linn shows ulcer prevention and protection activity and may be useful for prevention of ulcerative colitis....
Hyperglycemia in diabetes melilitus has been associated with increased formation of reactive oxygen species and oxidative damage to tissue compounds The main aim of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant effect of ascorbic acid in streptozotocin induced diabetic rats. Ascorbic acid is a naturally occurring organic compound with antioxidant properties. All albino wistar rats were divided into four groups and each group contained six animals. Group I (Normal control) received vehicle, group II (Diabetic control) received STZ (50 mg/kg i.p.). Group III and IV received STZ (50 mg/kg i.p.) along with ascorbic acid 500 mg/kg and 1000 mg/kg respectively. All the groups were treated for fifteen days. On 15th day the blood was collected by retro orbital sinus punctured method and centrifuged at 3000 rpm for 10 min to separate the serum which was used for the determination of antioxidant enzymes, lipid peroxidation and uric acid. The result shows the reduced antioxidant enzyme level such as SOD, CAT and peroxidase in diabetic rats were significantly increased by ascorbic acid. The lipid peroxidation and uric acid level in serum from diabetic rats were significantly decreased by ascorbic acid. It was concluded that the administration of ascorbic acid in diabetic rats can exert beneficial effects of anti oxidative defence system against that imposed by diabetes mellitus....
